Archive of photo-sharing themes Sept 2020 - Aug 2021

Thursday 10th September 2020: Two photo-sharing themes were set for the summer break: "Clouds" and "Mirrors", both to be interpreted in as free a way as you wish.

Thursday 24th September 2020: The photo-sharing theme for the fortnight leading up to this meeting is "Stripes".

Thursday 8th October 2020: The main photo-sharing theme for the period leading up to this meeting is "Boats". In addition, you are invited to share photos from any recent outing to somewhere interesting.

Thursday 22nd October 2020: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Parts of vehicles". The idea of this slightly unusual theme is to show visually interesting parts of cars, or any other vehicles. These can be internal or external parts, including such things as lamps, radiators, dashboards, engines, wheels, chrome trim, or anything else you fancy. In addition, we will share photos from our photo amble at Stone Lane Gardens on 11th October.

Thursday 5th November 2020: The main photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Fungi".

Thursday 19th November 2020: The main photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Autumn  colours". This theme certainly includes autumn leaves, berries and all the other signs of autumn that we enjoy in the natural world, but we would also like it to include colours of autumn clothing, decorations, and anything else autumnal that takes your fancy.

Thursday 3rd December 2020: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "A recent day out". Here, "recent" should be taken in a very liberal sense, and certainly covers the last 6 months, or even a bit more if you wish.

Thursday 17th December 2020: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "Books".

Thursday 7th January 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "Energy". We will also be sharing videos taken on smart phones or cameras.

Thursday 21st January 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "Memorabilia". The theme can be interpreted in any way you wish, but certainly includes the "public" sense of objects that remind us of well-known people, places or events, as well as the "private" sense of objects that bring back more personal memories of the past.

Thursday 4th February 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "Winter trees". The idea here is that your photos of trees should express a definite wintry feel. In the photo-sharing session, we hope to help each other identify the trees depicted.

Thursday 18th February 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this zoom meeting will be "A shot in the dark". The idea of this theme is to show photos taken out of doors between dusk and dawn or indoors under fairly low-light conditions (a church interior might be an example). Low-light photography can be quite challenging, because you need to open up the aperture or slow down the shutter speed, or both. Given the well-known difficulties, it's remarkable that some smart phones can take pretty good low-light photos, even hand-held. How do they do it?

Thursday 4th March 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Exeter: What, Where, and Why". The idea of this theme is to show photos of interesting things or places in Exeter, preferably with a story attached. It will add to the fun if you show things that are not overly familiar (but of course not overly obscure), because then people can try to guess where or what they are. If you need inspiration about noteworthy things in Exeter and the stories behind them, you can do no better than go to the web-site Exeter Memories.

Thursday 18th March 2021: The main theme for this meeting will be "Exploring your camera". Modern cameras have extensive menus with all kinds of capabilities, most of which we are unaware of. You are invited and encouraged to explore the menus (or the manual) of your camera, and find at least one interesting-looking capability. Then, find out what it does, try it out in practice, and show us the results at the meeting. Smart-phone cameras and camera apps are also interesting for this exercise. If this theme is not your cup of tea, then you are more than welcome to show us any interesting photos that you have taken recently.

Thursday 1st April 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Devon wildlife". We take the "wildlife" theme in a pretty broad sense, to include at least mammals, birds, insects, spiders, reptiles, and amphibians, but probably not people. It has to be wildlife that you've seen in Devon, and it doesn't include zoos, so no tigers and zebras, please! We also don't want to include flowers and other plants, because we want to keep those for a future theme.

Thursday 15th April 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "It's all in the detail". The idea of this theme is that it can sometimes be more interesting to take photos of just some characteristic part of a subject, rather than the whole thing. Interesting details can be all kinds of things, such as the grain of wood, the texture of rocks, the weave of a material - or perhaps the curious lettering on a monument. There are many possibilities!

Thursday 29th April 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Lympstone and other local villages". This theme follows up the photo-amble that took place at Lympstone on 19th April. Naturally, not everyone was able to participate in the photo-amble, so we welcome photos taken on other occasions at Lympstone or any other local villages.

Thursday 13th May 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Graffiti". This theme is not confined to the unwanted scrawlings on walls that can sometimes be an annoyance. It is meant to cover any kind of informal (i.e. not commissioned) street art that can sometimes be entertaining and thought-provoking (think Banksy, for example).

Thursday 27th May 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Spring highlights". This theme is meant to celebrate flowers, blossoms, trees, and any of the other things that give us cause to celebrate the spring season.

Thursday 10th June 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Hands and feet". Both are important for us in many ways, and we often use hands to convey feelings, issue warnings, attract the attention of others, and emphasise what we are saying. You are encouraged to show at least one black-and-white image, and, as a further way of ringing the changes, we would like you to include a square-format image.

Thursday 24th June 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Torre Abbey and other historic places visited recently (or even not so recently)". Torre Abbey is highlighted in this theme, because a few of us participated in a photo-amble there on 11th June.

Thursday 15th July 2021: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Contrasts". The idea of this theme is to show photos that prominently feature one or more contrasts of some kind. There are many kinds of contrasts that can be used, for example bright/dark, high/low, rough/smooth, saturated colour/muted colour, sharp/blunt, sublime/ridiculous...
