Archive of photo-sharing themes 2023 - 2024

Thursday 28th September 2023: The photo-sharing theme for the meeting will be "Shells and fossils" - please bring some photos you've taken this year or from your back catalogue, or even go out and start hunting for them now if you don't have any and you have the time.

Thursday 26th October 2023: This meeting's photo-sharing theme will be "Music". Your photos on anything connected with music will be very welcome, and you can also show videos, so long as they are short.

Thursday 23rd November 2023: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting will be "Colour - gold". The golden colour of leaves in this late autumn season is one possible source of gold photos, but there will be many others.

Thursday 7th December 2023: This is a zoom meeting and the photo-sharing theme of the meeting is "After dark". Taking photos under low-light conditions can be challenging, especially if we wish to avoid using flash. One approach is to use a slow shutter speed, specifying the shutter speed with "shutter priority" and mounting your camera on a tripod. This can be very successful if your scene is static, or if you want to deliberately blur any movement (fireworks, for example). However, if you want to freeze the movement, so that your shutter speed cannot be too slow, then you may need to use the widest possible aperture and increase the ISO as much as you dare. This theme will be an excellent chance to discuss the technical challenges of taking good photos "after dark".

Thursday 25th January 2024: The theme chosen for this meeting was "Home movies - from then till now". This represented a bit of a break from our usual habit of sharing only still photos. This time, members were invited to share movies they have made using their phone, their camera, or even their video camera. The subjects could be anything at all, including family events or happenings in the are where you live.

Thursday 22nd February 2024: The set subject for photo-sharing at this meeting was "Abstract". In preparation for this, the group watched a video at the previous meeting which presented some ideas about what is meant by "abstract" in the context of photography. Members were invited to show images illustrating their own interpretation of the concept, which might or might not agree with what the video suggested.

Thursday 28th March 2024: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "A sense of history". The idea here is to share images of buildings, streets, memorials, and other objects that take us back in time, preferably to before the Second World War. Sometimes the sense of history evoked by an image can be hindered by things like modern cars or advertisements intruding into the scene. However, with post-processing apps like Affinity Photo or Photoshop such things can sometimes be removed, and you are encouraged to do so if possible.

Thursday 25th April 2024: This time it's "Anything you like", and you are welcome to show us photos of anything that you have found interesting, entertaining, or instructive.

Thursday 23rd May 2024: The photo-sharing theme this time is "Spring unfolding". You are invited to share photos showing how spring develops from its first shoots and buds to its full efflorescence. When do you feel that spring starts, and when does spring turn into summer? We hope your photos will help to tell the story.

Thursday 27th June 2024: At this meeting we will be sharing photos on the theme of "The need for speed". This is a somewhat more "technical " theme than usual, because it's all about judging and setting the shutter speed when you take the shot, which is important when you are photographing moving subjects, such as flying birds, running animals, or dancing people.

Thursday 25th July 2024: The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Dartmoor" and everyone is invited to show photos of the vast wilderness that lies on our doorstep. A photo-amble on Dartmoor is planned for a date before the meeting itself, so please watch out for an email from Kris about this.
