Archive of photo-sharing themes Sept 2019 - Aug 2020

Thursday 27th September 2019: "Fairs and festivals". This theme is designed to benefit from the many fairs and festivals held in the Exeter area in the summer. In addition to this theme, we encourage you to try out one or more of the photo apps that Kris Frank talked about at our July meeting and tell us about what you found.

Thursday 24th October 2019: The object-based theme for photos to be shared on this date is "doorways". We hope this theme will benefit from a planned photo-amble to Topsham (weather permitting), but there's no shortage of interesting doorways in Exeter itself! The concept-based theme is "upwards and downwards", which you can illustrate with stairways, escalators, lifts, and probably many other ideas.

Thursday 28th November 2019: The object-based theme for this month is "autumn colours" - there won't be any shortage of material for this theme! For the concept-based theme, we propose the somewhat tricky notion of "precarious".

Thursday 23rd January 2020: This time, we have two object-based themes: the first is "Birds", to fit with the participation of eminent ornithologist Jonathan Elphick in our meeting. The second theme is "food and drink".

Thursday 27th February 2020: The object-based theme for the period leading up to this meeting is "Winter sunrises and sunsets". The concept-based theme is "Patterns". Photography has always thrived on patterns of all kinds, whether naturally occurring (fish scales, bird feathers, mackerel skies...) or artificial (fence-posts, multi-storey buildings, wallpaper...), so hopefully the "Patterns" theme will prove popular...? (Sunrises and sunsets never go out of fashion, of course.)

Thursday 26th March 2020: This meeting has had to be postponed because of the coronavirus crisis, but we are sharing some of our photos on our Gallery page. The object-based theme for this month is "Spring colours". This theme is an opportunity to celebrate the arrival of spring flowers, but if you wish to interpret it in the sense of spring fashions in the shops and the streets, you are more than welcome to do so. The concept-based theme is "What is it? Familiar objects from unfamiliar angles". We encourage you take photos of everyday objects in such a way that the viewer needs a moment or three to realise what he or she is looking at.

Thursday 16th April 2020: This meeting was held online, using the zoom video-conferencing app. The theme for photos shared at this meeting was "Lockdown activities", interpreted in a very broad sense. We also welcomed photos outside this theme.

Thursday 30th April 2020: This meeting was held online, using the zoom video-conferencing app. The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Room with a view". The general idea is to take interesting photos from within your house. You may do this in one chosen room or in more than one room, and the subjects of your photos can be inside or outside the house (you can take photos through the window, if you wish).

Thursday 14th May 2020: This meeting was held online, using the zoom video-conferencing app. The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "What is it?". The idea here is to present photos of familiar objects taken from unfamiliar angles. You can also take this theme as meaning simply "Abstract", i.e. photos of objects where the pattern, shape, or colours are the real subject.

Thursday 28th May 2020: This meeting was held online, using zoom. The photo-sharing theme for this meeting was "Textures". There are many possibilities here, including textures of: fabrics, old walls, beaches, wood, animal hair, and many others...

Thursday 11th June 2020: This was an online zoom meeting. The photo-sharing theme for the meeting was "The beauty of water".

Thursday 25th June 2020: A zoom meeting, as usual. The photo-sharing theme for this meeting was "The beauty of flowers".

Thursday 9th July 2020: Another zoom meeting. The photo-sharing theme for this meeting is "Pollinators". The busy bees are hard at work at the moment, but pollinators also includes wasps, moths, and several other insects. It's worth noting that you don't need sophisticated equipment to take bee photos - many smart phones will let you get in close enough to get very nice shots.

Thursday 23rd July 2020: Yet another zoom meeting. This time, the photo-sharing theme is "Sharp". This can be anything sharp, in any sense of the word, and certainly includes sharp objects, such as scissors, knives, needles, etc, but could also include sharp corners and sharply focused photos.

Summer break: There will be no meetings of the group in August, and the next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 10th September. There are two photo-sharing themes for the summer break: "Clouds" and "Mirrors". As always, you are free to interpret these themes in imaginative ways.
